VMware made it’s Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM) version 2 general release available last week. It has been a long awaited release to come out of beta. The product complements a VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) rollout. Some of the new features that VDM 2 offers are:
- two-factor authentication using RSA Security Inc.’s RSA SecurID
- optional encryption tunneling for Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) traffic using SSL
- pool management capabilities that allow VDM to organize and classify users
- support for remote USB
This release was aimed to begin to invade a market that has long been dominated by Citrix and a few other vendors. It also represents a big step forward for VMware to begin branching out from the management of systems to providing great provisioning technology to manage users and access as well.
